Smolen-Gulf Bridge
Higher and longer than all 17 of Ashtabula County’s covered bridges, the Smolen-Gulf Bridge stands proudly over the Ashtabula River. Ashtabula County has a long history of incorporating galvanized steel in its construction projects due to the aesthetic appeal and the low initial and life-cycle costs of hot-dip galvanizing (HDG). By galvanizing the Smolen-Gulf Bridge, the county ensured that steel corrosion would not stain the wooden structure or concrete piers, preserving a clean and natural look. The muted appearance of HDG steel enhances the beauty of the laminated wooden structure without overpowering it.
The galvanized components of the bridge include pier rebar, threaded rods, receiver plates, and guardrail. While these elements are crucial for the bridge’s structural integrity, they are almost entirely concealed within the design. HDG serves as both a bold, visible protective coating and a behind-the-scenes protector. Thanks to the hidden strength of HDG, the Smolen-Gulf Bridge will continue to stand out as a bold and enduring landmark.
